Zambia, Northern Province, Lake Tanganyika, Mpulungu basin, no exact locality data available, purchased in Inguenyo fish market, Mpulungu.
Biotope:
Restricted to the deeper, oxygenated depths off of Chituta Bay, Zambia.
Lives from 120 to 200 meters deep over muddy bottoms, during the day.
At night, possibly migrates closer to the surface. Apparently lives
sympatrically with Hemibates stenosoma.
Geographic distribution:
Endemic to Lake Tanganyika. Thus far, only found between Sumbu and Mpulungu,
Zambia in the extreme southern part of the lake.
Typical adult size:
At least 38 cm (15 inches).
Sexual dimorphism:
Females are entirely silvery. Male coloration includes vertical barring in
the middle of the body. The dorsal fin has a sky blue edge on the outer
dorsal fin, while the remaining portion is black.
