Rocky shore habitats in shallow to moderately deep water.
Geographic distribution:
On this site the species is regarded as restricted to its type locality, Cape Chaitika, Lake
Tanganyika.
Typical adult size:
Up to about 8 cm for males and 6 cm for females.
Sexual dimorphism:
Males grow larger than females.
Recommended aquarium size:
100 L.
Aquarium setup:
An aquarium with abundant rockwork to create caves and shelters; the bottom should consist of fine
sand, with some empty snail shells placed on the substrate.
Diet:
Omnivorous, feeding on algae and other microorganisms living in aufwuchs.
Breeding:
Breeds in caves or empty snail shells.
Aggression:
Rather aggressive within the species, but relatively tolerant towards other species, except during
spawning and while guarding fry, when it can become quite aggressive.
Special notes:
Ad Konings treats Telmatochromis brachygnathus as a synonym of
Telmatochromis temporalis in Tanganyika Cichlids in their Natural Habitat (4th edition). On
cichlidae.com it is still listed as a valid species reported from the southern and central parts of Lake
Tanganyika.
On tanganyika.si this taxon is treated as a valid species but restricted strictly to the type locality Cape
Chaitika. All other similar forms from T. temporalis complex are treated as Telmatochromis cf. temporalis, with only those from
the type locality of T. temporalis (Mpulungu and Mbity Rocks) regarded as true
T. temporalis.
On tanganyika.si this taxon is treated as a valid species but restricted strictly to the type locality Cape Chaitika. All other similar forms from T. temporalis complex are treated as Telmatochromis cf. temporalis, with only those from the type locality of T. temporalis (Mpulungu and Mbity Rocks) regarded as true T. temporalis.
