Xenotilapia burtoni 'Burton Bay'
Tribe / Genus:
Ectodini / Xenotilapia
Type locality:
Burton Bay, Lake Tanganyika, Democratic Republic of Congo
Biotope:
Sandy and muddy substrates at depths ranging from about 2 to 40 meters.
Geographic distribution:
Endemic to Lake Tanganyika, with a very restricted distribution limited to Burton Bay in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Recommended aquarium size:
Likely similar to related species such as
Xenotilapia longispinis
, requiring an aquarium with a minimum length of about 130 cm.
Aquarium setup:
Fine sand substrate with a few scattered, rounded rocks. Conditions should reflect clean, well-oxygenated water typical for Lake Tanganyika cichlids.
Diet:
Stomach examinations revealed remains of invertebrates, ostracods, diatoms, and small molluscs.
Breeding:
Breeding behavior has not been observed. Based on the well-developed sexual dichromatism, the species is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder.
Special notes:
Originally described as a subspecies of
Xenotilapia longispinis
, later elevated to full species status by Poll in 1986.
