The original description by Poll (1948) is based on specimens collected in
Lake Tanganyika. Morphometric data indicate a very slender body, a large
eye, a short and blunt snout, and a relatively short lower jaw. Dentition
consists of numerous fine, closely set teeth along the premaxillae and
mandibles.
In the aquarium hobby, several fishes have historically been identified as
Trematocara caparti; however, according to the consensus of most
Lake Tanganyika specialists, these records represent misidentifications,
mainly of T. nigrifrons and T. variabile.
Based on the original species description, it is therefore likely that no
confirmed photograph of a live or preserved specimen of
T. caparti currently exists. For this reason, only the original
drawing from Max Poll’s description is presented on this site.
