Tribe / Genus: Limnochromini / Tangachromis
Type locality: South of Mtoto in front of Moba, 1 km offshore, Lake Tanganyika
Biotope: Deep benthopelagic habitat over muddy or sandy plains, well offshore from the coast. Associated with low-light environments at considerable depth.
Geographic distribution: Endemic to Lake Tanganyika.
Occurs throughout the lake wherever suitable deep muddy or sandy plains are present. The species is reported to live in small shoals over such plains, with the elongated ventral fins thought to function as a sensory extension.
Typical adult size: Up to approximately 8.5 cm total length.
Diet: Primarily planktivorous, feeding mainly on copepods and other small zooplankton.
Breeding: Bi-parental mouthbrooder, consistent with other members of the tribe Limnochromini. Specific details on spawning behaviour are not documented.
Special notes: Originally described as Limnochromis dhanisi by Max Poll in 1949 and later placed in the monotypic genus Tangachromis. A specialized deep-water cichlid that is rarely observed due to its offshore and profundal habitat.
