Tribe / Genus: Haplochromini / Shuja
Type locality: Lake Tanganyika.
Biotope: Shallow, sediment-rich habitats, typically in intermediate zones.
Most often associated with dense beds of aquatic plants, especially Vallisneria.
Geographic distribution: Lake Tanganyika, including populations along the shores and in associated river systems such as the Lukuga, Malagarasi, and Rusizi rivers.
Typical adult size: Males reach a maximum total length of about 18 cm.; females smaller, reaching approximately 12–14 cm.
Sexual dimorphism: Males are more brightly colored and easily distinguished by a vivid yellow throat and more intense overall coloration.
Females are duller in coloration and smaller.
Recommended aquarium size: 350 L (larger volumes strongly recommended).
Aquarium setup: Aquarium with abundant rocks to provide numerous hiding places.
Keep only one male with several females due to strong intraspecific aggression.
Diet: Feeds primarily on small invertebrates such as shrimps and worms, which are picked from plant leaves or sifted from sand, as well as small fishes.
Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder with a polygynous mating system.
Spawning takes place on small sandy patches, often within Vallisneria beds or near rocky shelters.
Clutch size ranges from about 25 to 60 eggs.
Fry are released after an incubation period of roughly three weeks and may be guarded by the female for an additional period.
Aggression: Males form a dominance hierarchy based on size.
The dominant male monopolizes breeding and actively excludes subordinate males from spawning females.
Special notes: A monotypic genus within the Tanganyika-endemic tropheine lineage, characterized by a prognathous lower jaw and conical teeth.
