Lamprologus stappersi
Tribe / Genus: Lamprologini / Lamprologus
Type locality: Sambala River, St. Louis, vicinity of Mpala-Tanganyika.
Geographic distribution: Known from the lower Sambala River, Democratic Republic of Congo, which flows into Lake Tanganyika, and probably occurring in the lake north and/or south of the river mouth.
Special notes: Lamprologus stappersi is most closely related to Lamprologus meleagris. It differs from L. meleagris by the presence of scales on the cheek, a deeper caudal peduncle, greater preorbital depth, smaller eye diameter, and a larger interorbital width. This species has a maximum of 9 anal fin spines, whereas L. meleagris may have up to 10. Body and fin coloration are unknown. Ad Konings considers L. stappersi and L. meleagris to represent a single species with geographically structured variation, while Heinz Büscher maintains that L. stappersi is a valid distinct species. The taxon L. stappersi has never been rediscovered since the original description based on a single specimen.
